Dear Quarterbackers: The last home game for the '09 version of Rocky Top was an especially pleasing one: We beat Vandy and that never gets old. We became bowl eligible (which has several benefits like more practice time for our young team). Wes Brown continued his Eric Berry impersonation, this time with a picksix that more resembled a runaway bull trying to be tackled by a mosquito! This on his last play in Neyland Stadium; was a perfect ending to a very deserving Volunteer. We did have a downside in that more members of our defense suffered critical injuries, with Greg King lost for the Kentucky game and most likely the bowl game as well. Somehow, Monte will patch something up and still offer formidable resistance to the Cats of Kentucky next week.
Everyone knows about the 'Cats, who are also bowl eligible again this year. After whipping the Dawgs in Georgia, they will be hosting our banged up Vols with a great deal of confidence next week in Lexington. Well, as much confidence as a team that has lost 178 games in a row (slight exaggeration) to our Vols could possibly have. The streak, which is actually 24 games, is the longest in Division IA and will be on the line next week.
As usual. We have a treat for you tomorrow. Matt Hayes, of Sporting News fame, is one of the most respected and knowledgeable writers on college football. As a TSN subscriber, I turn to his column first thing each week and have never been disappointed. Thorough, opinionated, and a student of the game, Matt is both entertaining and challenging.
Please come early to get good parking. See you around noon.
