October 19th Newsletter

Dear Quarterbackers;

Uh Huh…that is what I am talking about! We needed that didn’t we?

Nothing salves the hurt of losing like the thrill of winning and win we did. The second half of the Mississippi State game was by far the best half our team has played on special teams, offense and especially defense. I said last week that Eric Berry is the best sophomore defensive back I had ever seen. Not so sure that he is not the best defensive back (period) I have seen at this level. I am sure happy that his helmet has a power T on it! His jersey needs a power S on it as well! I am sure that you have already heard this, but just in case not, Eric has already set the interception return yardage record for a career in the SEC and is closing in fast on the NCAA record. Not bad for halfway through your sophomore season!

Now our sites are set on ‘BAMA. The two most winning programs in the SEC, now playing on the 4th Saturday in October (doesn’t sound right does it?) will be squaring off in Neyland next Saturday night. My hope is that we will have newfound confidence and joy n playing the game. The kids seemed to be having fun Saturday and I hope that carries over to next week. Discipline and concentration does not mean you wait around for something bad to happen. Playing loose does not mean you are undisciplined, but playing tight almost always translates into underachieving. Now with little to lose, we need to just bring it with passion and not be afraid of making mistakes. Analyzing can be paralyzing.

Our speaker this week is Mike Gottfried, one of my very favorites in college football. He has had great success as a major college coach and TV commentator (Please read his bio on the website) but he is an even better person. You absolutely do not want to miss him tomorrow at Calhouns.

We are blessed in East Tennessee, especially when autumn firms its grip. Let’s celebrate tomorrow!
