Dear Quarterbackers;
It had been rumored all during the week. Black Jerseys, will they really do it? Mr. Hamilton denied it… several times, but you never really know.
During warm-ups, we were clad in all orange…the secret was still safe. Would they change before running through the T? Nah, just a rumor. If they don’t dress in black for a night game on Halloween, then they probably won’t ever. But before you could say dunt, dunt, dunt, da duntda da, they were in BLACK! Yep, the Big Orange were in black! I looked at the game maxims of General Neyland, and it didn’t say you couldn’t! As for this volunteer, I thought it was great. After all, it is about the kids and they wanted it BAD. The biggest kid of them all, Monte Kiffin, actually campaigned for it as well.
But the jerseys weren’t the only thing black. The fortunes of the South Carolina gamechickens were even darker. After the disappointment of coming up short at Alabama, none of us could predict if the kids were going to have a Tide hangover. Not these kids, black jerseys or not, they were looking for brighter days at Stevies expense. It was my best Halloween ever! No tricks, just one big chicken sandwich and plenty of turnover candy to enjoy all night.
Sorry, I get carried away when we spank any SEC eastern rival, especially whichever one we are playing that day. The Vols looked very good and seem to be improving weekly. No doubt this staff is getting the best out of these guys and they are enjoying the building process. I am too, and bet you are as well.
Big stuff tomorrow at Calhouns on the River. Coach Dickey will be in attendance to speak to us and catch us up on what he is doing these days. Much of the traditions and pageantry of Tennessee football has its roots in Doug Dickey. The T’s on the helmets, running through the T as formed by the Pride of the Southland, and many others are from the urging and persuasion of Coach Dickey. Several wins, SEC championships and fantastic leadership as AD are also part of his legacy. Please join me tomorrow to hear from one of the legends of Tennessee athletics.
Of course, we will celebrate this win, honor our weekly high school players of the week and take time out to recognize a yesterday’s hero as well. Let’s continue to support the Big Orange as we enter into the final third of the season with basketball coming around the corner. It is truly Great to be a Tennessee Vol!
You don’t have to wear black, but if you want to change into it just before Doug speaks, that is fine with me.
Let’s get the Tigers next week! |
